If you’re looking for supplies to complete your home remodeling project in Birmingham, there are a lot of great options.
This list is in no way complete, and I have not been paid to endorse any of these places. These stores are a great place to start because you’ll find a lot of available options at these suppliers that can help you design your home remodeling project. Once you have an idea of where you want to go, you and your contractor can select the right materials for your design tastes and needs.
Southeastern Salvage
There’s a reason I have this as number one on my list. I love this place! When I have the time I can spend hours wandering around looking at all the cool stuff available for home remodeling and decorating.
If you haven’t been to this store, I highly recommend going, just for the sheer enjoyment of random browsing. A shout out to the granite-hewn freestanding tub that fuels my dreams. It had been sold the last time I went there. But I’m hopeful to see another one someday.
Between drooling over the amazing assortment of custom front doors, and going gaga over the selection of unique tile and stone samples, I’ve definitely done my time here.
I’ve found hard-to-find kitchen cabinetry and unique garden accessories, art, rugs, furniture and more. Like I said, if you’ve never been here – go! It’s easy to find, right off the I-20 at Grants Mill Road in Irondale, just over the hill from Birmingham proper.
84 Lumber
Also located in Irondale adjacent to Birmingham is 84 Lumber. Obviously, it’s a great place to get….um, lumber. Don’t let the name fool you – they offer a wide range of supplies and services, from bathroom and kitchen cabinets to outdoor erosion control, roofing, moulding, green living options and more.
If you need to order custom lumber sizes the store is a great option as well. They also have a stores in Bessemer, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville.
Ferguson Bath and Kitchen & Lighting Gallery
This is a beautiful showroom in downtown Birmigham in the Avondale area that is jam packed full of so many ideas and inspiration to homeowners shopping for ideas – and products – for their next kitchen or bath remodel.
This store carries an extensive collection of high-line fixtures and appliances. It is a really fun place to shop or browse for the top-of-the-line and state of the art equipment.
The team is here is very professional and extremely knowledgeable. Although the offerings here can be quite pricey, it is high on my list of go-to places for the very finest appliances and fittings.
Plus, like I said, it is loaded with great bathroom and kitchen remodeling ideas!
Floor and Decor
Definitely on the top of my list for flooring selections. Located in Homewood, Floor and Decor makes getting flooring easy. Their selection is vast and is a great place to get ideas and materials for your next flooring project.
They’ve got a great wood-look tile selection, and a vast array of water-resistant laminates that are great for families looking for beauty and durability. And their tile selection, and mosaic tile selection are incredible.
I can spend hours browsing this store and get lost in all of the different beautiful options available, but I can also find what I need quickly.
If you’re looking for remodeling ideas, don’t overlook Floor and Decor, because inspiration can come from the ground up and they’ve got some really nice displays on hand.
Mazer Appliance
Located in Downtown Birmingham, Mazer appliance is one of the largest appliance showrooms that I’m aware of in the area. They offer a full range of mainstream brand appliances that are priced for the average consumer.
They offer hard-to-find counter depth refrigerators, stoves, vent hoods, dishwashers, wall ovens, washers and dryers and even air conditioning units and dehumidifiers. Lord knows we need those in the south! Mazer is also a factory authorized clearance center. Be sure to check out their selection of scratch and dent items for even greater savings.
The employees are a very knowledgeable crew that can help answer customers’ questions. I am always very impressed with the courtesy and helpfulness of the staff and gladly recommend this store as a great go-to place to furnish a kitchen or laundry room.
Henry Tile Company
Because I do a lot of kitchen and bathroom remodeling I spend a lot of my time sourcing tile and one of my favorite tile stores is the Robert F. Henry Tile Company. Henry Tile is located off 1st Ave. North in Avondale, just east of Downtown Birmingham. The selection of brands available are bar none some of the finest tiles available anywhere. This vast selection allows homeowners in Birmingham to achieve any interior design aestetic imaginable. Their showroom offers a gorgeous display of both modern and classic style designs along with a rainbow of color and different material options. While there is an impressive amount of product in stock and immediately available, there are even more options to select from for order.
Speaking of custom ordering, not only does Henry Tile offer an extensive selection of exquisite tile options but you can also order custom stone countertops and fabricated countertops for a truly unique look to bring to your next home remodeling project.
I highly recommend a visit to Henry Tile, even if it’s only as a visit to gain inspiration for your next patio, kitchen or bathroom remodeling project. The designs on display are genuinely stunning.
Habitat For Humanity ReStore
Habitat has an important charity mission to bring affordable housing to struggling, hard-working people and is spread out all over the United States.
When I was down in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, the Habitat ReStore was one of my favorite stores to browse around in. The Marigny store was packed full of glorious old materials like real wood doors, hurricane shutters, old glass doorknobs, transom fittings, fireplace medallions, old chandeliers and the like. It was like a discount antique store where I could browse for hours picking over the relics of a bygone era.
Because of the old housing stock in and around Birmingham, I’ve always expected our local Habitat to have some of these treasures. Unfortunately, they typically do not. But just because you might not be able to find 100-year old amethyst doorknobs there is no reason to discount the store entirely.
The local Habitat for Humanity, located on Crestwood Boulevard in between Crestwood proper and Irondale, has a good selection of affordable doors — both interior and exterior – bathroom fixtures like toilets, sinks and tubs, cabinets, flooring materials, lighting, and remaindered paints. A lot of the materials donated to this location are contractor grade.
Because it is a charity that relies heavily on donations of items, you never know exactly what you’ll find there. That makes it worth a quick stop to browse around, especially if you’re looking for something small, affordable, or unique. If you’re in the middle of a home remodeling project, it is also a great place to donate your old or unused materials to.
I have a long list of other stores I will be adding to this list but I’ve been eager to get this little bit out because I wanted to share some great places to start on a home remodeling journey. If you’re interested, be sure to bookmark this page because I will be reviewing a lot more stores in the near future.
