Light bar

A simple way to remodel your bathroom is by changing the lighting fixtures. You can replace the fixtures with more modern ones, or install brand new lighting for a new level of ambiance.

Types of Bathroom Lighting

There are many different types of lighting options for your bathroom, depending on what your needs and preferences are. The main type of bathroom lighting is called task lighting, which is for using the restroom, putting on makeup, or brushing your teeth.

There is also ambient lighting, which allows light to bounce off the ceiling. If you want more design elements and illumination in your bathroom, you can choose accent lighting fixtures or decorative fixtures.

Some materials to choose from with your bathroom lighting include gold brass, stainless steel, iron, pewter, chrome, and glass.

Average Costs of Lighting

Adding new lighting to your bathroom can be one of the least expensive parts of remodeling your bathroom. Though this depends on the type of lighting you choose. Some lighting fixtures are considered high-end, such as solid brass, and can cost you hundreds of dollars just on a single lighting fixture.

Real gold fixtures are often above $1,000. However, other lights might be as low as $50-$100, making it an inexpensive renovation that you can do yourself.

What to Expect From Installation

If you decide to install the lighting on your own, you need to decide whether you are simply replacing a current light or actually doing re-wiring for a brand new light.

If you are re-wiring, hiring an electrician is highly recommended. However, if you are simply remodeling your bathroom and want new lighting fixtures, switching out the old ones is easy.

Here are some basic steps involved in installing lighting fixtures:

  • Turn off the power source, double-checking that no power is being generated in the bathroom.
  • Remove the old lighting fixture, including the base and mounting screws.
  • Disconnect the wires, paying attention to which wires go where.
  • Connect wires to the new lighting fixture.
  • Install the base and mounting screws on the new lighting fixture.
  • Turn on the power to test the new light.

Bathroom lighting provides an important element to the bathroom, so it is important that you not rush through the decision making.

With these tips, you should be able to choose what lighting looks best in your bathroom.
